Abstract

From the journalism studies viewpoint, this article reviews relationships between existing academic offerings in communication studies, working conditions and the education given to future journalists in Latin America. The study states that the traditional labour market is unable to absorb more professionals in the mass media. Likewise, it warns that universities would not be responding to society's real demands, harming the insertion of new graduates in the working world, and at the same time, placing on the table the identity problems the profession has carried with it since formal journalism education was established in the region.
