Abstract

Butanol is considered one of the most important compounds due to its large number of applications. It can be used as biofuel, raw material for plasticizers and solvent in the textile and painting industries. Another important application is the butanol use as the platform for producing added-value compounds widely used in industry. Traditionally butanol is produced by fermentation taking into account different technologies to reduce the inhibition problems. In the last years the use of butanol as chemical platform has been mentioned by some authors. Nevertheless, it has not been deeply and systematically studied. Based on the above, this chapter analyzes the possibilities of butanol as a chemical platform to be a biofuel and to obtain different added-value products. For this purpose a technical, economic and environmental assessment was done. It is shown that butanol can be a promising platform to be used in future biorefineries for obtaining added-value products.
