Abstract

It is our intent to approach to the study of the predominance of Latin literature and language teaching in the nineteenth century in Chile, whose cultural matrix was forged in an intellectual space starting in the 1840s, with a primacy that modulates the educational system up to the 1880s, a period in which progressively both positivism and philology-with disputes over cultural, political, and even religious issues-displaced the classical humanities model, setting in its place the study of the Spanish Language.
