Abstract
Our interest to investigate about the National Institute emerges when we back to XIX century in order to study the literary criticism and the conditions for its appearance, which includes education as a key space to understand the literary field. The fundamental hypothesis which guides this investigation states that at the beginning of the national foundation project as well as of chilean literature, the National Institute became a central axis in the building up of the republican imaginary and also in the making of the citizen-writer. For this purpose, we will review the function of the Institute as an educational institution where the political, cultural and literary ideas were developed and taught to understand some of the reasons for its permanence as a sui generis institution.
