Abstract

The design of the front pages is the result of decisions regarding the topics, their status and the semiotic resources used to display them. In recent years, the public debate on the Chilean pension system has appeared on the front pages of national newspapers due to a tension between citizens unhappy with the low pensions granted by the system and the economic elite that benefits from its operation. Consequently, a question arises: how are semiotic resources used to display the debate of the Chilean pension system in the design of the front pages of national reference newspapers? To respond, the present paper proposes to characterize the use of these semiotic resources. The results show that the newspapers form a frame of reference, whose design partializes the information by representing a social reality that conceals social conflict.
