Abstract

Based on a descriptive and reflexive analysis of Latin American journalism, through a documentary and historical review of the last decades, this article analyzes the evolution of the labor market for journalists and its relationship with the educational reality delivered by regional universities. Results of the analysis reveal inconsistencies between the requirements of the labour market and the conceptual development of journalism as a profession and academic field; in this respect, they question the social relevancy of educational schemes used by the schools of journalism and communication in Latin America.
