Abstract
This article presents and discusses the results obtained on the sociodemographic and working profile of the Chilean journalist and social communicator. On the basis of a census of these professionals in the region del Bío-Bío - the second most important zone of the country - a random stratified sample was surveyed to determine their sociodemographic characteristics, as well as aspects of their working condition, academic training and personal life. The information from this study leads to some conclusions with regard to the type of professionals who graduate from universities and who through their role influence the social construction of reality. In addition, this study contributes to the discussion of the state of the art studies of the journalistic profession and professionals of communication globally, opening the door for subsequent comparative research that can start to generate results at the Latin American level.
