Abstract
For many, Latin American journalist education can be divided in a "pre" and "post" CIESPAL age. Through a critical literature review, this article shows the fusion of journalism and communication in the Latin American education, as well as the formal evolution of the field in the last decades, because of the influence that CIESPAL had within the profession. According to the analysis, CIESPAL ended up radically modifying journalism education models; this is reflected in the different occupational and professional cultures that exist up to today. Indeed, the lack of consensus about the definition of the journalist, as well as problems of the institutionalization of the communication field would have been provoked by the decontextualization still not solved with the studies of communication that were established in the subcontinent.
