Abstract

This article analyzes the conceptual coincidences between Sir Philip Sidneys Defence of Poesy (1581) and Giambattista Vicos Scienza nuova (1744). We propose as elements in common the emphasis on the poetical expression of primitive cultures, the importance of the American case as evidence of this feature and the role of poetry in the origins of philosophical thought. Besides, we establish as a possible link between both authors the writing Of poetry by Sir William Temple.
