Abstract

The objective of this paper is to explore the social and existential dimensions that have been overlooked in previous studies of Sobredosis, the first collection of stories by the Chilean novelist, journalist and filmmaker Alberto Fuguet. This paper reads the universality of the collection's coming-of-age stories with male protagonists in the light of the affective elements that characterize the teenage body and teenage energy. This occurs within the political and social conjuncture of the Chilean transition to democracy that allowed for a reevaluation of socially accepted models of masculinity. I characterize teenage affect with the help of Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari's concept of "lines of flight" in order to understand youthful energy as a form of rebellion against the figure of a father that becomes indistinguishable from the capitalist state. I complement the reading of affect and lines of flight with Herbert Marcuse's adaptation of the oedipal triangle to consumer societies in order to analyze the impact of mass media and popular culture on the configuration of masculinities which escape the norms established by the milieu of the Chilean late eighties.
