Palygorskite from the ancient mine of Sacalum, Yucatan, Mexico was mineralogically characterized and its applicability as drilling muds was evaluated. The clay consists of palygorskite with minor illite and iron oxides. The rheological properties of the clay suspensions are suitable for preparing drilling muds.
