Abstract
The main lessons achieved through three years of paleosismological research in central-South Chile are offered. Thank to these clues, a team composed by Chilean, north American and Japanese researchers, within the framework of the Fondecyt No 1020224 project "Sedimentary evidences of natural catastrophic events to determine its recurrence and hazard", rebuilt the prehistory of giant earthquakes and tsunamis occurred during the last 2,000 years in this part of Chile. On the basis of these results, a new recurrence rate for such events is proposed. In the same way, an explanation of the enormity of the 1960 Chile earthquake is also proposed.
