Abstract

Alvaro Guevara Reimers (Valparaiso, 1894 - Aix en Provence, 1951) was a Chilean painter, writer and boxer who participated in the avant-garde artistic movements in Europe during the first half of the twentieth century, particularly in London and Paris. Guevara arrived in England at the age of 15 and returned to Chile in two occasions only, the first one between 1922 and 1926 when he developed the project "Negros" on which this essay is based. By looking into his work, it is possible to retrieve an important still unknown part of the twentieth century history of Chilean, which is essential to understand the arrival of modernity in our artistic context and the problems it produced.
